Random Group Generator for Names & Numbers

Paste your list, one entry per line, choose how many groups you need, and Random Group Maker shuffles everyone into fair teams. Entries that don't divide evenly are pulled into a separate Extras tray so no group gets stuck with an odd, uneven headcount — drag them in yourself or let Random Group Maker place them at random.

How the random group generator works

  1. 01

    Paste your list

Add one name, number, or ID per line into the input box. Random Group Maker accepts any text, so it works for classroom rosters, employee lists, raffle numbers, or tournament entrants alike.

  2. 02

    Choose a group count

Tell Random Group Maker how many groups you want. It works out the largest number of entries it can place evenly in every group.

  3. 03

Leftovers go to Extras, not into uneven groups

If 22 names are split into 5 groups, each group gets 4 names — and the remaining 2 names sit in a separate Extras tray instead of being force-fit as an unfair 5th name in two of the groups.

  4. 04

    Drag, drop, or auto-redistribute

Drag entries out of Extras into whichever groups make sense, or click Redistribute Extras to place them randomly across your existing groups.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to leftover names that don't divide evenly into groups?
Random Group Maker divides your list evenly first. Any names left over after that even split are placed in a separate Extras tray instead of being forced unevenly into existing groups. You can drag them into any group yourself, or click Redistribute Extras to place them randomly.
Is the grouping actually random?
Yes. Entries are shuffled with a Fisher-Yates shuffle before being divided, so every draw produces a fresh, unbiased order.
Can I rearrange people after the groups are generated?
Yes. Every entry is a draggable ticket. Drag it from one group into another, or into or out of the Extras tray, at any time.
Does this work for numbers as well as names?
Yes. Enter anything, one item per line — names, numbers, emails, or team codes — and Random Group Maker shuffles and divides them the same way.
Is Random Group Maker free to use?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser, is free, and doesn't need an account.
